History

The period after 1990 has seen a substantial migration of the qualified scientific personnel from the Republic of Georgia that was caused mainly by economic hardship and general instability following the demise of the Soviet Union. This process has immediately affected the scientific potential of the State, as well as - in the longer run - the training of the young generation of scientists. If the situation is not improved quickly at all levels, this may lead to irreversible changes.

As a part of the solution of the above-mentioned problem, it was recently proposed to establish the Virtual Institute of Physics. The proposed framework, in particular, makes it easier for the Georgian scientists, who permanently reside outside Georgia, to get involved in the scientific collaboration and to perform teaching duties in Georgia. The project was presented and has received the approval of the Government of the Republic of Georgia at the Business-Scientific Forum (Tbilisi, October 2009). At present, the some steps in the implementation of the project have already been done.
